How we list businesses

Where listings come from

We start from public business information: name, address, phone number, website and business category. Then we read each business's own website for the facts we show, such as the services it offers (pumping, installation, repair, drain fields, inspections, aerobic systems) and whether it advertises 24/7 emergency service.

Who gets listed

A business is listed when it clearly offers septic services and has a phone number or website. Plumbers, excavators and other contractors are listed only when their own website says they do septic work. National chain locations are listed and marked as chain locations. We leave out septic tank manufacturers, supply stores and government offices.

What "checked" means

VettedSeptic shows three checks on every listing: state business registration, the state septic license where the state requires one (in Alabama, for example, the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board licenses onsite sewage professionals; in Texas, the TCEQ licenses installers, site evaluators and maintenance providers), and proof of insurance sent to us by the business. Each check shows the date we did it and a link to the source when one is public. A business we have not checked yet says "Not yet checked." Checks are never for sale: paying for placement does not change what we check or what we show.

A check is a snapshot on the date shown. It is not a guarantee of anyone's work, so confirm the license and get a written estimate before work starts.

How listings are ordered

On city pages, businesses that paid for placement come first and are labeled Ad. After that, independent businesses come before chain locations, businesses that publish their prices come next, and the rest are listed alphabetically. Reviews and star ratings do not affect order, because we do not collect or republish them.

Keeping it current

We re-read business websites about every 30 days. If something is wrong, use Report a correction on any listing and we will fix it, usually within one business day. Businesses can ask us to remove their listing at any time.
